Propane Tank Sizes & Types
RVs use either portable DOT cylinders (like BBQ tanks) or ASME tanks (permanently mounted). Understanding the difference helps you plan refills.
Portable DOT Cylinders
- 20 lbs: Most common. Holds ~4.7 gallons when full.
- 30 lbs: Less common but available. Holds ~7 gallons.
- Pros: Removable for refill. Can exchange or refill at many locations.
- Cons: Tank exchange services only fill to ~15 lbs (not full 20 lbs).
ASME Tanks (Horizontal)
- Permanently mounted under the RV.
- Common sizes: 30 lbs, 40 lbs, 100 lbs.
- Pros: Larger capacity. Filled on-site by mobile propane trucks.
- Cons: Can't easily remove for service.
Where to Refill
- U-Haul, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware: Refill by weight (best value).
- Walmart, Gas Stations: Tank exchange (convenient but less propane for the price).
- RV Parks/Campgrounds: Some have on-site refill services (usually more expensive).
- Propane Dealers: Best prices for ASME tanks, can come to your RV.
