Managing Humidity in Your RV

RVs are prone to high humidity due to small, enclosed spaces and human activities like cooking, showering, and breathing. Too much moisture causes mold, mildew, musty odors, and condensation damage.

Ideal Humidity Range

  • 40-50% RH: Ideal for comfort and preventing mold.
  • Below 30%: Too dry—causes dry skin, static, and cracked wood.
  • Above 60%: Promotes mold, mildew, and dust mites.

Sources of Moisture in RVs

  • Cooking (especially boiling water)
  • Showers and sinks
  • Human breathing (~1 pint of water vapor per person per day)
  • Wet clothes drying indoors
  • Leaks in roof, windows, or plumbing

How to Reduce Humidity

  • Ventilate: Open windows/vents while cooking or showering. Use roof vent fans to exhaust humid air.
  • Dehumidifier: Electric or rechargeable desiccant types (Eva-Dry, DampRid).
  • Fix Leaks: Inspect and seal any roof, window, or slide leaks immediately.
  • Dry Clothes Outside: Don't hang wet laundry inside the RV.
  • Use Lids: Cover pots while cooking to reduce steam.

Dehumidifier Types

  • Electric (20-30 pints/day): Best for full-time use with shore power. Empties into a tank or drain hose.
  • Rechargeable Desiccant (Eva-Dry): No power needed. Absorbs moisture for 2-4 weeks, then plug in to "recharge." Great for storage.
  • Disposable Desiccant (DampRid): Cheap, lasts 1-2 months. Good for closets and small spaces.
